Michael Victorino |
A L O H A. Many of you already know me – whether it’s from my many years on the County Council, coaching Little League, heading the Maui Fair, attending Church on Sundays or through my support of Maui’s non-profits - and you know that the Maui community is important to me and my family. My motto is “Balanced Vision, Local Values.” I will utilize my Experience and ability to Collaborate to Lead the County where it needs to go. When making the decisions that will impact current and future generations, government must have input from everyone in its community. MY PRIORITIES FOR MAUI COUNTY:
I humbly ask for your vote on November 6, 2018. Mahalo, Mike Victorino |
About Michael Victorino
HIS ROOTS
In 1871, Michael Victorino’s great-grandfather left the Azores for Hawaiʻi, seeking a better future. With little more than optimism and a strong work ethic, he succeeded in improving his family’s life. Four generations later, his great-grandson Mike abides by these same values to improve life in Maui County.
As a local boy, Mike has always worked hard. His family of humble means taught him the importance of helping those in need so he has devoted much of his life to helping Maui’s public, private, youth and non-profit sectors, while supporting his family.
EDUCATION & BUSINESS EXPERIENCE
“I was never a traditional learner,” confessed Mike. “I learn best through experience. In fact, it was English subtitles in Japanese movies that taught me how to read. You had to read fast if you wanted to keep up with those old Samurai movies!”
Following high school graduation, he studied business management at Hawaiʻi Community College and Hilo College. After three years of study, he was hired to open Zales at the Queen Kaʻahumanu Shopping Center. When his contract expired, he went through the McDonald’s Management Training Program, AKA Hamburger U, known globally for excellence in teaching executive management skills.
After working as a manager for McDonald’s, Mike entered the insurance business as an agent for Combined Insurance, working his way up to County Manager. After working for a couple of other insurance companies, he settled in with First Insurance Company of Hawaiʻi. When Hurricane Iniki hit Kauai it changed the company because it eliminated the marketing division. He moved to Bishop Insurance as a manager. After Bishop was acquired by American Savings and HECO in 2001, he joined Mutual Underwriters where he remains today.
FAMILY LIFE
Maui girl, Joycelyn Nakahashi, met Mike while both were working at McDonald’s. “She changed my life,” Mike shared. “In 1976, I sealed the deal and married her. It was, and continues to be, the best decision of my life.” The newlyweds were soon blessed by two sons, Michael Jr., born later that same year, and Shane born in 1980. Like most couples, they’ve experienced both triumphs and struggles during their 42 years of marriage, including some lean financial hard times.
Joycelyn still tears up when she recalls their smartest investment decision. In 1998, Joycelyn recalls vividly the day she was shopping with Shane when he told her that he needed a baseball batting glove that cost $39.95. She asked Shane if he really needed the glove or just wanted it. “He said he needed it, so we decided to charge it on our credit card. We scrimped and saved and managed to pay it off in installments.” Their decision paid off in spades. Shane grew up to become a MLB All-Star, and member of World Series Championship teams, the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies and 2013 Boston Red Sox, and four-time Gold Glove Award winner.
The Victorino family endured other hard times including a cancer scare, two major surgeries and near-fatal car accident caused by a drunk driver, but the family always pulled together, united by their optimism and willingness to work hard.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Mike is well-known throughout Maui for his many years of coaching Pony League, Little League, soccer and for his service through the Knights of Columbus, Maui Economic Development Board, his church and numerous other community organizations. In 1995 Mike served as Director of the Maui County Fair, a job that remains dear to his heart. He was later elected to the Maui County Council in 2006, chairing various committees during his ten-year tenure.
ABOUT LOCAL VALUES
“Growing up in 1950’s Hawaiʻi, our neighborhoods consisted of all ethnicities but the best part was, everyone got along. We had to. We might not always understand one another’s customs, but we learned to adopt and adapt,” remembered Mike “That’s what Hawai’i has always been about, and I think we need more of that today. Respecting one another and finding common ground should never go out of style. For me, local values are universal values because values have no color, political affiliation or religion. Local values are really very simple: consider how your words and actions affect others, honor family and tradition, be honest and respectful, work hard, don’t talk stink, and always bring more than you take. If everyone did that, most of our problems would be solved.”
